    – Filipina writer and historian Carmen Nakpil’s observation about the effect of Spanish and U.S. colonialism on the Philippines. Nakpil died at 98 in 2018, making her a contemporary of the woman in this picture.

    This was during the US’s 42 year long occupation of the Philippines, which happened to coincide with the US annexing Hawaii.

    The Philippines won their Independence from the US during WWII.
