My husband worked for Motorola during its golden years. They sent him one of these types to test in the field. We drove way out in the middle of nowhere, set a batwing antenna up on the trunk, and tried to talk to somebody sixty miles away. Years later, he said Motorola screwed up and gave away their lead in the phone business when they didn’t evolve fast enough. I also remember when we were first married, on our way to dinner one night, a news story on the radio about a man suing because his wife died of a brain tumor after constant cellphone use. I asked my husband if this concerned him, and he dismissed it.

He died at 59 of a glioblastoma brain tumor after 25 years with Motorola.

Some wealthy friends of my grandparents had a satellite bag phone in the early/mid 80s. I remember seeing it & being amazed.

Now we have wireless handheld computers that fit in our pockets.
